Recharge: Inside & Out
We must not let the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives overpower our souls. My favorite bible verse reminds us of this:
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 4:23 NLT
With all the craziness going on today, we must always make sure we are being kind to our hearts and souls. From the Muslim Ban, Dakota Access Pipeline, Flint Water Crisis (unrelated to Donald, but heartbreaking)... It is truly exhausting being an empathetic person. I would not change my sensitive nature for the world, but sometimes I need to unwind and take my mind off all the chaos surrounding our country and world.
The truth is... many of us feel imprisoned by the Trump regime. Our values are under attack. Are we now a regressive nation that no longer cares about any sort of values? Are we now a nation that has an admitted sexual assaulter, unfit and unqualified white nationalist as the commander-in-chief? The answer to the first question is tricky. The answer to the second question is an astounding YES (whether you believe Donald is president or Steve Bannon, the answer is yes).
Since it is very clear who Donald is, there is no need for me to delve into the very black and white answer of his character (or clear lack thereof). Instead, I prefer to explore the tricky question of who we are as a nation and how to cope when you're genuinely terrified for the ramifications on people's lives.
The threat this presidency poses is very real and people's lives are already being damaged in catastrophic ways. If you're like me, you can't just sit by idly while people suffer. We have a portion of this nation that still believes in facts and we have another portion who will literally allow themselves to be lied to, directly in the face.
So who are we as a nation? I'll tell you. We are who you thought we were. Always remember, Donald lost the popular vote by a staggering 3 million. Why will this always be significant? This means majority of us saw this disaster from a mile away and wanted no part of it. Find solace in that fact. Since we do have numbers on our side, we must make our voices heard. Protest (it's your right), call your elected officials, protect marginalized groups, donate to civil rights organizations, etc. Most of all, be the exact antithesis of Donald on a grassroots level.
Listen to survivors of sexual assault, don't use your body as just a sex object for men, believe in FACTS, be there for people when they share their stories of discrimination, learn about different cultures, and open your heart to understanding what different groups of people go through. Don't let anyone convince you to abandon your morals, have a backbone (sexual assault & racism should enrage you).
Basically, be the best un-Donald you can be.
Always remember: the devil is a LIE. He will have you believing the world is in irreparable disrepair. He will have you feeling powerless. Don't let all the bad events and news alerts overwhelm you. Stay healthy. Stay fit. Get out and enjoy nature, recharge your mind. Stay convicted, but not consumed. Be aware, but not obsessed.
Last but not least, be proud of the work you're doing. Nothing wrong with patting yourself on the back! I am so proud my future child, male or female, will know I worked my booty off to make this world a better place for him or her. I long for a world where children of all colors and creeds feel valued, loved, and know the sky is the limit.
